25 May Roma vs Firenze
I know we have only been here one day, but there are already some differences. Rome is definitely more of the New York City of the US. However, Florence seems like it’s closer to Pittsburgh or a smaller city. I am not sure which one I like best because they both seem amazing so far. I loved the constant motion and excitement of Rome. There was always something to do, and no matter how late we were out there were a lot of other people out too. However, in Florence the area seemed a lot more quiet. Tonight a group of us went out to dinner. We went later so when we left it was already 10:30. The whole place seemed to be asleep. I am not sure if it was because everything was already closed, or if people here just do not go out as late, but Florence seems more serene.
In addition, Florence seems like more of a family town. Just from walking around today I feel like I saw more little kids and families walking around. This thought was strengthened when I talked with Dr. O’Connor about it having a strong sense of community. It is no wonder why Dante loved Florence so much. There is a sense of closeness and community. I really enjoyed wondering around Florence today, and I look forward to learning more about this town and how it influenced Dante and his life.
